Ivan and Nikola Gajić Twin brothers, born in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1991. Through their studio practice, Ivan and Nikola have developed a unique approach​ by isolating and reimagining elements commonly associated with graffiti—such as​ gestures, letterforms, and textures within opaque surfaces. Their goal is to find new​ visual representations for these elements, pushing the boundaries of urban and​ abstract art. Beyond the influence of graffiti, much of their inspiration stems from their​ surroundings and the cultural heritage of Yugoslavia. Born the same year​ Yugoslavia officially dissolved in 1991, they feel a deep connection to the era’s​ abstract monuments and cultural expressions. This motivates them to recreate a​ similar energy and timelessness, honoring their abstract heritage while introducing​ these concepts in innovative ways that highlight a unique aspect of their culture. In their collaborative work asSobekcis, they construct images through​ subconscious gestures and forms that are later meticulously arranged to create​ contrast within flat color fields. The dynamic between them as twin brothers is​ central to their process; they describe themselves as existing in a state of duality,​ where one element in their artwork is naturally balanced by a corresponding​ counterpart, much like the principles of Yin and Yang. This duality creates a​ powerful synergy, where each perspective contributes to a cohesive vision that​ surpasses individual contributions. Their creative process is driven by the friction and difference of opinion that arise​ throughout, which they view as a vital component in reaching the best possible​ outcome. This balance of harmony and contrast allows them to refine their​ individual visions and shape a unique artistic identity. “In the abundance of similarity, there is a need to search for contrasting​ differences.”

The composition of the artwork emerged through a process of creating numerous freehand gestures on paper. This meticulous approach involves carefully selecting and refining these gestures to form the final composition.

The work explores the dynamic between analog and digital processes—developing forms entirely by hand, then arranging those elements using digital tools. This juxtaposition highlights the contrast between the organic textures of hand-drawn marks and the flat, opaque colors and geometric structures created digitally, which ultimately serve as the framework or “skeleton” of the artwork.

Through this process, our intention was to ensure that the artwork retains our signature color palette and forms, while giving these elements a new, more natural and organic feel. And we find that this quality is best embodied through the medium of silkscreen printing.
